At HelixBioDx, we understand that medical testing can raise many questions. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing to help you better understand the process, purpose, and what to expect.
PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing is a highly sensitive laboratory method used to detect genetic material from a specific organism, such as a virus or bacteria. It is widely used for diagnosing infections, including COVID-19, UTI, and other pathogens.
PCR tests can detect a wide range of pathogens, including viruses (like SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, RSV), bacteria (like Enterococcus, Staphylococcus), and genetic mutations. At HelixBioDx, we offer PCR panels for respiratory infections, UTI’s, wound infections, and more.
Sample collection depends on the type of test. Common methods include:
PCR tests are considered the gold standard for diagnostic accuracy due to their high sensitivity and specificity. They can detect even very small amounts of genetic material, making them more reliable than rapid tests in many cases.
Results are typically available within the same day the sample is received by our laboratory.
Medicare/Medicaid and most commercial insurances do pay for PCR testing, but we recommend confirming with your insurance company directly. HelixBioDx also offers self-pay options for those without coverage.
