Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – PCR Testing

At HelixBioDx, we understand that medical testing can raise many questions. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing to help you better understand the process, purpose, and what to expect.

What is PCR testing?

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing is a highly sensitive laboratory method used to detect genetic material from a specific organism, such as a virus or bacteria. It is widely used for diagnosing infections, including COVID-19, UTI, and other pathogens.

What can PCR tests detect?

PCR tests can detect a wide range of pathogens, including viruses (like SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, RSV), bacteria (like Enterococcus, Staphylococcus), and genetic mutations. At HelixBioDx, we offer PCR panels for respiratory infections, UTI’s, wound infections, and more.

How is the sample collected for a PCR test?

Sample collection depends on the type of test. Common methods include:

  • Nasal or nasopharyngeal swab (for respiratory infections)
  • Urine sample (for UTIs)
  • Stool sample (for GI pathogens like C. Diff)

How accurate is PCR testing?

PCR tests are considered the gold standard for diagnostic accuracy due to their high sensitivity and specificity. They can detect even very small amounts of genetic material, making them more reliable than rapid tests in many cases.

How long does it take to get PCR test results?

Results are typically available within the same day the sample is received by our laboratory.

Will my insurance cover PCR testing?

Medicare/Medicaid and most commercial insurances do pay for PCR testing, but we recommend confirming with your insurance company directly. HelixBioDx also offers self-pay options for those without coverage.

How does my facility set up an account with HelixBioDx?

Setting up an account is easy. Visit our website at www.helixbiodx.com and click on the “Contact Us” link in the upper right corner of the page. Complete the form, and a team member will reach out to you.

How do we get supplies to take tests?

Once your account is set up, we will provide you with a starter supply kit. Additional supplies can be ordered through our website www.helixbiodx.com and clicking on the “Order Supplies” link in the upper right corner of the home page.

Are test results automated?

Yes, our system is fully automated. Once samples are processed, results are securely delivered via fax and/or email. Additionally, we offer the capability to interface directly with your facility’s systems via HL7 if desired.

Do you perform blood tests?

No, we do not currently offer blood testing. Our services focus on PCR-based testing for viral and bacterial pathogens using swabs or other non-blood samples.

Do samples need to be refrigerated?

If samples are collected and shipped the same day, refrigeration is not needed. However, if there’s a delay in shipping, samples should be stored in a refrigerator at 2–8°C until they can be sent.
